Transportation & Traffic Relief
for District 1
I’ve lived in North Charleston my entire life, and when my mom moved our family to District 1 when I was 16, we had to adjust to daily traffic. Years later, when I got my first apartment and later bought my first home in District 1, the traffic still hadn’t improved. From then until now, congestion has been a constant challenge for the people who live, work, and travel through our community.
I understand this issue because I’ve lived it — and I’m committed to addressing it.
Expanding Transportation Options
Safe Bike Lanes
Dedicated bike lanes would give people a safe, reliable way to get to work, school, or run errands without needing to drive. When more residents can comfortably travel by bike, that’s fewer cars on the road — especially during peak hours.
Walkable, Mixed-Use Communities
Another important strategy involves thoughtful land-use planning. Mixed-use communities — neighborhoods that combine housing, shops, restaurants, offices, and public spaces — make it easier for people to live closer to where they work and shop.
Benefits include:
-
Fewer car trips
-
More walkable, vibrant neighborhoods
-
Stronger small businesses
-
Less pressure on major roads
When daily needs are nearby, people don’t have to spend every trip behind the wheel.
Understanding Road Widening & Induced Demand
I am optimistic about the planned widening of Dorchester Road. However, it’s important to acknowledge induced demand — the phenomenon where widening a road initially reduces congestion, but over time, more drivers use that road, causing traffic to return.
This is why widening alone is not enough. We must pair road improvements with strategies that reduce the number of cars on the road and give residents meaningful choices.
A Balanced, Community-Driven Approach
As your councilman, I will advocate for balanced transportation solutions that improve traffic flow while giving residents real options. If we want meaningful, lasting progress, we must pair infrastructure improvements with strategies that support how people actually live, work, and travel through District 1.
A smarter North Charleston is one that moves better, lives better, and works better for everyone.
